I hope all of our families came through the storm safely. I know we had several teachers with flooded neighborhoods and a couple with water in their homes or without power. I heard from quite a few families who had flooding, downed trees or loss of power, but, thankfully, no injuries to family members. We did have a power outage in the middle school classrooms due to the storm but FPL came out and had the power back on before 10:00. We lost lights, but not air conditioning, in some of the elementary classrooms mid-afternoon. Two classrooms were still without air conditioning at the end of the day. It was good it that the temperature outside was in the reasonable range and teachers were able to open windows and go to other classrooms. All in all it was an eventful three days. Any students absent. tardy, or dismissed early have excused absences for Thursday and Friday. Everything should return to normal Tuesday so teachers and students can get back to their lessons.
This week aftercare clubs begin officially. Monday we have free play activities, K-1 music, and science club. Tuesday is free play activities, strings instruments, coding, chess, and homework assistance. Wednesday is free play activities, 2nd-3rd music, tutoring K-3, homework assistance, and Star Squad (art/cooking). Thursday will be free play activities, drums, homework assistance, and book club (6-8). Friday is free play activities and ukulele. Sign up with Ms. Kathy or Mr. Bryan after school.
The first PTO meeting will be this Thursday from 6-7 PM. Check out the flyer on the SAA website. We hope you will join us. When you come, you can sign up on the volunteers site to enroll or reactivate for 2016-17. Just stop in the office and we'll help you get started. We can use your help in many different ways; you'll hear about some of them at the PTO meeting.
Last week I introduced you to the first grade teacher, Mrs. Lopez. Another new face you may see belongs to Ms. Tippett who teaches K - 5 art and the Star Squad after school club. Ms. Tippett joins us from a St. Pete school where she taught art and digital art classes. Before that she taught middle school art in Michigan. She is certified in K - 12 art and secondary biology. During the interview process, we were impressed by her enthusiasm and the way she had started student recognition and service projects as well as her experience and knowledge. She will be heading the yearbook team this year. We are delighted she is part of the SAA team.
Events coming up...
Tuesday the fifth graders will be interviewed by a team from the Van Wezel for a
video they are producing. Then on Sunday, our advanced chorus will participate in the 9/11 commemorative program at the Patriot Plaza at the Sarasota National Cemetery from 6 - 7:30 PM. The public is invited to participate. SAA Governing Board will convene for the September monthly meeting in the administration building on Monday, 8:10 AM.
Enjoy the rest of the Labor Day weekend and next week.
