This week the 5th through 8th graders start their benchmark tests in social studies and science. These are important because they mimic the end-of-year tests, giving the students a preview of the types of questions they will be asked. They also provide information to the teacher regarding gaps that need to be addressed. The Civics test for 8th graders will be Tuesday morning from 9:00 - 11:00. The science tests will be given later this week and next.
On a lighter note, the middle schoolers will have their Fall Dance this Friday evening from 7:00 - 10:00 PM. At the first dance of the year, we limit participation to our current students only. We do this because of space and for safety reasons. Since it is close to Halloween, students may wear their costumes but faces should not be covered and the costumes must be within the guidelines for the dress code. The cost of admission is $5.00 plus an item of food for the Mayors' Feed the Hungry campaign. Students should enter through the side gate as the back gates will be locked for security reasons. Please pick up at the same gate.
We have begun sending home letters to parents of students with excessive tardies and/or absences. It is so important that students are at school for the whole day. Academic classes at all grade levels are scheduled from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. At the middle school level, student attendance is recorded by the period of the day. Please have your child here in time to gather supplies and be ready to start on time.
Our SAA School Advisory Council will meet this Wednesday at 4:15 PM in the administration building. We will be reviewing the School Improvement Plan. When we receive feedback from the district, we will share our goals for this year with all of you. This year we are also working on our Charter Renewal application. After five years, every charter school must be evaluated in light of the progress made in the first five years. There may be members of the Charter Review team on campus visiting the classrooms over the next few months.
We are celebrating the students who made Honor Roll for the first quarter this week. You can see a list of names of honor roll students on our website. Congratulations to these students. Parents are welcome to join us for the awards.
Have a wonderful week!
