Along with the testing this week, we have several events planned for students and parents. Ms. Garabedian's third graders have been working on their social studies project for second semester. They will present a "wax museum" of important figures who have contributed to our country over the years. The event will take place Thursday evening between 6:30 - 7:30 PM. Last year they held the museum during the school day and most of the students' parents were able to attend. We hope by having it in the evening, all will attend. This is an important event for the students who have worked so hard doing research, preparing their speeches and posters, and pulling together costumes and props.
The event is open to any member of our school community. Friday, they will present to fellow students in other grades.
Tuesday is the birthday cake for April. All students with an April birthday are invited to share birthday cake with me during their lunch time. Then on Thursday, the Honor Roll ice cream social will be held in the afternoon. Student names are posted on the website. Congratulations to all who earned Honor Roll or Principal's Honor roll for 3rd quarter.
We have a few things scheduled for May that you will want to mark on your calendar. May 6 is the 8th grade yard sale and the 42nd Street fundraising event. While neither is mandatory for students, they both will generate needed funds to support student activities and we do hope you will participate. See the website for more information for the yard sale and call Ms. Julie at 941-544-4232 for 42nd Street information. Mrs. Julie asks that students remember to turn in their permission slips for the May 6 times so she can finish planning. In both events, parents who participate can earn volunteer hours. May 10 (5:30 - 6:30 PM) we will hold a special meeting for incoming kindergarten students for 2017-18. Parents of these students will receive an invitation with more information later this week. May 11 (6-7 PM) will be the meet and greet for the 2017-18 2nd graders and their parents. You will receive more information from Mr. Kolowith. May 18 we will hold our arts expo at school in the evening. Student work from music, drama, dance, video production, digital arts, visual arts and after-school music will be displayed and demonstrated between 6 - 8 PM. We hope many of you will be able to join us to see what our students have accomplished this year. Of course, there are all of the end-of-year trips - check with your child's teacher about these and remember to have your security clearance on file if you are planning to chaperone.
April is Math Awareness month, however SAA students have been working throughout the year on math facts through Xtra Math to increase their math fluency. On May 5 we will be having a set of "math bees" to highlight their work. Math is one of our main target areas this year and was a focus of the SIP with incentive support from one of our business partners, Capstan Financial Consulting Group.
Please remember to log in your volunteer hours. As you know, SAA asks each family to volunteer 10 hours during the school year to support our school and the students. Whenever you help in the classroom, on a field trip or with a special program, you are completing hours. If you have attended the PTO meetings or participated in the Family Fun nights, you have earned hours as have parents who have helped with long or short music trips, costumes, props, chaperoning rehearsals or transporting students. Logged hours helps us obtain the Golden School Award, a required part of the 5 Star Award. For those of you still looking for something to do, there are plenty of opportunities with the spring musicals, May events listed above, the Luau, 8th grade graduation, and end-of-year parties. We also would love to have someone donate two crotons to replace our dying ones on campus - a little thing but it helps. We appreciate so much whatever you do.
Two more reminders - no 42nd Street rehearsal after school Monday. Remember to buy your tickets (for it and the elementary shows) and put up the posters. The April SAC meeting is Wednesday, April 26 at 4:15 PM in the administration building and the Governing Board meeting will be Thursday, April 27 at 8:00 AM in the administration building.
Have a great week!
