i have to start off by saying thank you on behalf of myself and all of the staff to the PTO and all the parents and students who made Teacher Appreciation Week so special. i think we were spoiled with all of the breakfasts and lunches plus the flowers and gifts provided this past week! We deeply appreciate all the things the PTO Board ad the parent volunteers have done for SAA and the staff during this past year.
Saturday was a special day for the drama students under the direction of Mr. Jeff Goldman. It marked the first dramatic presentations of work they have been doing in the exploratory drama classes. Students presented a fashion and drama show to parents and friends after lunch in the reading garden. The event was well attended by parents and family members who I am sure join me in commending the students on their poise and acting talents. It was a delight to see the students stretching themselves and experiencing the challenge of "straight" drama in addition to the musical theater they are more used to. A special thank you goes to Mr. Jeff for organizing the event and to Plato's Closet for providing the clothing the actors wore during the performance.
We are fortunate to have the outdoor stage area and the sound equipment to allow this kind of performance to take place. We will be expanding the drama department more next year with the addition of classes in newscasting and video production as these are newly approved courses for middle school. The equipment has been purchased through the start-up grant for charter schools and will be ready for use in the fall. You've already seen some of our new audio equipment in use by the students in grades K-4 as the leads were able to use body mics as well as the fixed microphones.
The spring productions continue tomorrow night at the Glenridge Theater with the 5th grade production of Annie. You can still purchase tickets for $10.00 per person at the school until 4:15 or at the door after 5:00. The last production of the year will be the middle schoolers in Once Upon a Mattress at the Players Theater on May 22. Please contact the box office by phone or on their website to purchase tickets. Parents of all students are invited - and encouraged - to attend.
Mrs. Julie needs as many volunteers as possible this coming Saturday, May 16 to help from 9 to 3 to put together things for Once Upon A Mattress. She needs several people specifically to put together the scaffolding for the bed as well as lots of painters and costume helpers. Please come if you can, even if it is only for an hour or so.
Testing will be complete for the middle schoolers this week with the Algebra EOC on Monday and Tuesday and the Civics EOC (7th grade) on Wednesday and Thursday.
Parents of fifth graders are asked to remember the Science Fair and Veterans' Flag Presentation on Wednesday, May 13. Please contact Ms. Garabedian for specific times you are invited to join the students for the events.
Please check the calendar for the end-of-the-year award ceremonies and kindergarten and eighth grade graduations. Students in grades K-3 will have moving-up days the last week of school (May 26-28) so they can visit next year's teachers. You will hear more about these events from the teachers.
Have a wonderful week!
