The music department had a great turnout at their Applebee's pancake breakfast fundraiser this morning. Thanks to all the students who served and cleaned tables and all the families that supported the event by coming out. This is a great fundraiser because the school makes 60% of the ticket price which supports the transportation costs for student concerts and rehearsals. Thank you!
You have probably noticed the signs around town about the March 20 referendum vote. I am passing along some information about the referendum so everyone knows what they are being asked to vote on:
- The 1-Mill Referendum is a property tax assessment that supports education in Sarasota County.
- For every $1,000 in home assessment, there will be a $1 tax. For example, on a home valued at $250,000, the tax will equate to $250.
- This is not a tax increase, but rather, a tax extension that supports students, teachers and schools throughout the district.
- Funds raised through the referendum are used wisely and stay in Sarasota County to promote educational outcomes for students.
Tuesday all 4th through 8th graders will participate in the FSA English Language Arts Writing Assessment. A letter explaining the assessments and providing a calendar of the assessment dates was mailed home to all families last week. Please try to have your child at school, on time, Tuesday morning. It is a 2-hour assessment to allow enough time to plan and write a response to a particular writing prompt. Students have been practicing, looking at punctuation and capitalization, citing text evidence, and using appropriate transition words and vocabulary to express their thoughts. The 4th through 7th graders will be writing out their responses while the 8th graders will be using the computer. Please encourage your child to do the best job he/she can but not to become anxious about the assignment. As I said, they have been writing all year and especially practicing the conventions so should do well. After this, the next assessment is third grade reading in early April.
Be sure to check out the SAA calendar for upcoming events. All end of year trips are now posted on the school calendar. We are including a summer camp fact sheet and application in the information we send home Monday. If you don't see one and are interested, please contact the office. Monday is the Governing Board workshop on selection of the new principal.
Have a great week!
