Happy New Year! I hope everyone has enjoyed the holidays and Winter Break and was not subjected to too much of the cold. I am so thankful to be back in Florida but I must say I am looking forward to warmer weather here again.
January is going to be a very busy month so please check your emails and the calendar often for all of the events. School starts back tomorrow with the beginning of second semester. Middle school students will be given their new schedules Monday morning. Many requested new electives and we have some changes due to first semester grades. First semester grades should be available in the portal later this week and on paper early next week. One major change is the moving of music classes into the Julie Rohr Preschool building. SAA is leasing the large room closest to the lunch area for all music and dance classes. Room 14 (formerly music) becomes the social studies classroom for 7th and 8th graders.
Tuesday is the January Governing Board meeting at 8:00 AM. Also on Tuesday we turn in the documentation for our charter renewal application as required for all charter schools after the first five years of operation. This is the second step in the process which involves interviews by the Charter Review Committee and the Sarasota County School Board.
Coming up this month is the 2nd Annual Variety Show for our students. A flyer was sent home earlier in the year for sign-ups and we've had a few groups practicing already for auditions which will be held during the school day on January 16 - 18. Please contact Ms. Garabedian for more information or stop by the office for a flyer. Reminder information will be sent out via email this week.
Literacy Week is scheduled for January 22 - 26. This is our fifth year for the daily activities emphasizing reading and the Thursday night activities for the family. Information has been previously sent home and email reminders will be sent this week. We need donations of gently used books for all ages for our "Book Sale" on Literacy night. Please drop off books in the office. A volunteer sheet will be posted online by Ms. Marsh.
Auditions for Footloose, the Middle School spring musical, are scheduled for January 23 in the evening. Students were given audition scripts before Winter Break. See Ms.Julie for more information. Footloose will be presented at the Players Theatre on May 18, 2018.
There are also PTO events, MS History Day, the District School Showcase, and high school open houses for our 8th graders. As I said, it's a busy month. Please remember to check the calendar. We look forward to seeing you at the events.
