This is a busy time for students and parents as we begin our seventh week of school. Attached to the hard copy of the newsletter, you will find the progress reports for middle schoolers and the student photos. Please ask for them if you don't see them come home.
Last Wednesday we had our second School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting and looked at our school improvement goals for the year. These have been submitted to the executive director for charter schools at the district level and we will share them with all of you once they have been approved by her and the School Board. As a charter school, we adhere to many district and state requirements. Going through the process of writing the annual School Improvement Plan (SIP) is a positive thing for us - it focuses on what went well last year and what we need to be doing to improve this year. If you would like to be a part of this process, you are welcome to join us as a SAC member, a Business Partner, or a Parent Volunteer. You can contact me, Kelly Marsh, or Rebecca Blitz if you are interested. Kelly will be sharing some opportunities for parent volunteering so please check out her emails and the SAA website.
One area that we now need volunteers for is the Middle School basketball team. Basketball try-outs start October 17 and Coach Swilley is looking for volunteer coaches for both boys and girls teams. Games are played after school from 4:00 - 6:00. (You would need a level 2 clearance through the district.) If you would like more information or to volunteer, please contact Mr. Swilley at the school number (941-377-2278) or through his email firstname.lastname@example.org. A very special thank you goes to Marci Toomey, mother of Sage (6th grade) for coaching the girls' volleyball team. She was here for all of the practices as well as the games. Thanks, Marci.
The first musical performance is this week. Wednesday the kindergarten and first/second grade classes will present their plays during the day for Heron's East and Sunshine Meadows residents and that evening for parents at the Glenridge Theatre. The evening performance is at the Glenridge Performing Arts Center (7333 Scotland Way. Sarasota, FL 34238) with the kindergartners taking the stage at 6:00 PM. They need to arrive in costume at 5:30 PM. The first and second graders should arrive by 6:55 PM to perform at 7:15 PM. The cost of admission is $5.00 for adults which covers the rental fee for the theater. Please remember to send in the medical emergency forms (notarized) for the morning trip. (Several of us in the office are notaries if you need the service.) Also, remember to send the students in their costumes on Wednesday morning. They should bring a change of clothes for the afternoon.
The fourth and fifth graders will be attending a performance of the Sarasota Orchestra on Tuesday, October 4. All students should wear their school polo shirt. Again, remember to send in the permission slips.
Speaking of polo shirts, the middle schoolers need to buy up at Children's' World before the end of the month. They will need to wear them November 11 when SAA Middle School students walk in the Veterans' Day Parade and perform in the ceremony following the parade.
The next Governing Board meeting will be Monday, October 10 at 8:00 AM.
Have a wonderful week.
