Another week flew by with just three and a half weeks left in the school year. It's moving too fast!
The week in review...
- The students completed testing for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th grades. We had good attendance so there are only a few make-up tests to be done this week.
- The kindergartners were a delight to watch in their presentation of Winnie the Pooh last Monday. The students really seemed to enjoy themselves and took on their character roles with great dedication.
- Thursday, as I'm sure you know, we went under lockdown because of the reported gunshots near St. Martha's School. It turned out to be unfounded but it was still a scary situation for the students. Our staff and students responded exactly as needed. Thanks to alertness of our students and staff, we were already in lockdown when contacted by the school district. Mr. Matt was in constant contact with the police and our own assigned sheriff's deputy was on campus throughout the lockdown and dismissal. We sent out notification to parents through our email program when we went on lockdown and again when it was lifted and are trying to see how we can send a mass text message so you receive the notice in more timely fashion.
Mrs. Cheryl Korwin, who will assume the position of principal for 2018-19, will be joining the staff tomorrow and will be on campus to get to know students, parents, and staff as we make the transition. She will be working with Mr. Matt and Dr. Kopacz on staffing and scheduling as well as the budget for next year. She will also be working with the Governing Board in planning to meet the safety and security legislative mandates.
This week we have the Science FSSA for 5th and 8th grades. Eighth graders take the test in two sessions in one day while fifth graders have one session per day over two days. This is a paper-based test. The elementary students will also be starting the final reading and math diagnostics through i-Ready.
Evenings will be busy this week. See Ms. Julie's notes below about the 1st and 2nd grade musical on Monday and the 3rd and 4th grade musical on Tuesday. Thursday the first "Art and Reading Fair" will be held on the campus beginning with hotdogs and followed by a display of 4th and 5th grade reading projects and artwork from all students. Please join us to see what the students have been doing this year.
Everyone should have received information about the end-of-year trips and promotion activities. Please check the website calendar or contact the homeroom teacher for more information. The kindergarten graduation is May 16 and the eighth grade graduation is May 21.
Notes from the Music Department
It is another busy week for the music department! The t-shirts and hoodies have come in and will be distributed on Monday. Please look for them when your child gets home.
Monday and Tuesday night are shows at Glenridge. 1st and 2nd grade will
present Seussical Kids Monday night at 6pm and 3rd and 4th grade will present Little Mermaid Jr. on Tuesday night at 6pm. Rehearsals will be during the day. Kindergarten will watch the Seussical rehearsal and 1st and 2nd will watch the Little Mermaid rehearsal. Please be sure all permissions have been turned in. Tickets purchased in advance will be waiting for you at the door.
We had another successful donation day at Publix at Sarasota Crossings and we thank those students and parents for working. We have the last one on Saturday and it will be at three different Publixes. We still need parents and students to work shifts. This counts toward parent volunteer hours. Please call Julie at 941-544-4232 if you can work a shift.
The middle school spring musical “Footloose” is two weeks from Friday. Please be sure to publicize it by putting up posters or putting it on social media. There is an ad on the SAA Facebook page. Please share it. Also please remember to get your tickets either on line or by calling the Players Theater. We want to be sure every parent has a seat!
Have a wonderful week!
